The area serviced by this dam is prone to extended draughts and the feasibility of the construction of a dam in this region had to be evaluated. The feasibility study as well as the Environmental scoping indicated that a dam in this area could only benefit the community. The final decision was to design and construct a zoned earth fill dam of approximately 500m long and just less than 10m high. The spillway is a broad crest weir with a stepped gabion chute slab on the downstream face of the dam. This will terminate in a gabion stilling basin prior to release of the flood water into the river. The outlet system is two simple pipe culverts with upstream control sluice gates. Limited instrumentation is allowed for in the project.
