  • New EIA Project Awarded to Renardet S.A. & Partners Consulting Engineers LLC
  • Scope of Work:

    Izz landfill had been constructed under the supervision of the Ministry of Regional Municipality and Water Resources. Some supplementary construction works has recently been completed under supervision of be’ah.

    The EIA study foresees the expansion of a landfill cell construction with a capacity of approximately 1000,000 tons in addition to the required leachate aeration ponds and other supporting facilities such as weighbridge, asphalted aces road, surrounding fence for the expansion site, etc.

    The EIA study will comprise the following:

    • Stage 1 – Establishment of the Baseline Studiesthrough data collection and site visits, as well as document review for the biophysical, social and health aspects of the environment to establish prevailing conditions prior to development of the proposed Project:
      • Geotechnical investigations – installation of four wells for water and soil analysis;
      • Site investigations of air and noise;

    and

    • Desktop studies of topography, geology, hydrogeology, ecology, socioeconomic conditions, cultural and archaeological sites.
    • Stage 2 – Impact identification and assessment of the actual and potential environmental impact of the proposed Project; Evaluation of Significance to determine the relative importance and acceptability of residual impacts (i.e., impacts that cannot be fully mitigated);
    • Stage 3 – Analysis of Alternatives;
    • Stage 4 – Mitigation and Impact Management to establish necessary measures to eliminate, minimize or compensate predicted adverse impacts, where appropriate;
    • Stage 5 – Preparation of Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan.

    EIA will state current Environmental, Health and Socio-economic settings of the area, which will include various element including:

    Environmental aspects:

    Assessment of ambient air quality (NOx, SOx, CO, CO2, VOC, CH4, PM10, PM2.5, H2S), Identifying the prevailing wind direction and development of wind rose, Soil mechanics and stability of the reclamation, Soil and water contamination and assessment, Climate change, Noise assessment, Ecology, Topography, Geology, Hydrogeology, Surface water drainage and review of flooding pattern, Direction of flow of groundwater, Visual pollution

    Socio-economic aspects:

    Population, Archaeology, Settlements distribution, Demographic features, Community study and employment opportunities, Stakeholder engagements, Land use, Transportation and access, Utilities, Traffic load, Labor influx to project area, Waste management services, Other public infrastructures (schools, universities, markets, hospitals, shops, libraries, mosques etc.).

    The study will cover the entire project site as well as an appropriate area within a radius of about 5-10 or as set by Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs or any other regulatory body in Oman, outside the project site, which may be potentially impacted by The Project.
